Rating: - * Kept Me Riding Despite Nearby Forest Fires ... I rode with this mask on days when the air quality for particulates (PM 2.5) was officially in the "Hazardous" category (over 300 on the Air Quality Index scale). My daily commute is 7 miles each way, and this mask allowed me to keep riding in spite of really crappy air. While wearing the mask, I could not smell the smoke, nor could I feel it in my throat or lungs. Trying to ride without it was awful. Note: you can't ride fast, because it does restrict breathing somewhat, and breathing hard can cause the mask to lose effectiveness. But as long as you keep a reasonable speed, it seems to work very well. Unlike the similar "Techno" model, this mask only filters particulates. The Techno model includes activated charcoal, to help filter out urban pollutants. But that mask looks less comfortable in the heat because it is mostly neoprene. You can purchase Techno filters and valves for this mask, to give it the same filtering capabilities as the Techno model. Overall - this mask helped to protect my lungs, and allowed me to keep riding throughout an otherwise hellish summer. Rating: - * Dust? What dust? ... My whole family uses these masks for off road ATV riding while visiting the sand dunes and other dusty desert locations. This environment has to be the "worst case scenario" for ANY type of filtration mask. My evaluation is: THIS MASK WORKS, PERIOD. The Velcro strap is a very convenient way to keep the mask where it belongs. Two of the best features are the "one way valve" that allows exhaled air out with minimal restriction and the great filtration of the filter media. Also, the sturdy construction of the mask helps when you are physically exerting yourself (Motorcycle/ATV riding, etc.); when soaked with sweat it still holds it shape and conforms to your face. Based on this characteristic, it would be great for joggers. I would say that this mask is at least 10 times better than the el cheapo white paper with elastic band. They are a little pricy, but what the heck, you get what you pay for. LOVE `EM Rating: - * Good mask ... I found the mask to be very effective in cutting down the polutants sucked in the lungs standing on busstops and riding bicycles in Los Angeles. Also serves to keep people away since you will look kinda intimidating - great for women as an added measure of safety :-) |
